Surfer SEO vs Frase
Content optimisation at nearly a hundred a month, or briefs at half the price?
Last revised 2026-09-17
Our pick
Surfer SEO, if you only buy one
Surfer's on-page optimisation is still the category standard and it is the one that changes rankings rather than just organising research. Frase is better at briefs and SERP analysis and cheaper to start, then its realistic tier lands above Surfer's entry price while still not including keyword volume or rank tracking, so you end up paying for a second tool anyway.

What each one is actually for
Surfer scores a page against what is currently ranking and tells you what to change. Frase researches the SERP, extracts what competitors covered, and builds a brief a writer can work from.
Both have drifted into each other's territory, which is why people compare them, and both are still noticeably better at their original job.
The price story on both
Surfer's tiers have crept upward, with the top self-serve plan now well over two hundred a month, and credits get consumed by writing and optimising alike, so the plan you chose on volume assumptions is not the plan you end up on. The company was acquired by the French group Positive in October 2025 and is repositioning around AI search visibility, which is where every tool in this category seems to be heading.
Frase looks cheaper until you price the tier you would actually use. After its 2026 restructure the realistic working tier lands around a hundred a month, above Surfer's entry plan, and still does not include keyword volume or rank tracking. Annual billing locks you in with no prorated refund. Frase has also been under Copysmith ownership since 2022, alongside Rytr, so it is not independent either.
Where Frase wins anyway
Briefs. If you run writers, and the bottleneck is getting a researched outline into their hands quickly, Frase's SERP analysis genuinely saves hours per article. Agencies keep it for that reason and it is a good reason.
Where Surfer wins
Publishing at volume against competitive terms. The content score is crude and it works, and editors who have internalised it produce pages that rank. If one subscription has to justify itself on traffic outcomes, it is this one.
How we would buy it
- •One tool, publishing regularly, ranking is the goal: Surfer, monthly.
- •Running a team of writers who need briefs: Frase, monthly, and expect to add something for keyword data.
- •Publishing a few posts a month: neither. This is a hundred a month for a workflow you do not have yet.
- •Chasing AI answer-engine visibility specifically: both are pivoting toward it and neither has proven anything. Do not buy either on that promise.
Surfer SEO
3.0DrinkableThe on-page optimisation is still the category standard, but the price has crept to $219 for the Pro plan, credits get consumed by both writing and optimising, and the company is quietly renaming itself around AI visibility. Good tool, expensive habit, and a moving target.

3.0DrinkableFrase's SERP analysis and content briefs genuinely save hours, which is why agencies keep it. Then the 2026 restructure pushed the realistic tier to around $103 a month, above Surfer, while still not including keyword volume or rank tracking, so you need a second subscription anyway. Annual billing locks you in with no prorated refund.
