They are not the same job
Descript is a production tool. It transcribes your recording so you can delete a sentence from the transcript and have it disappear from the audio, remove filler words in a click, and clean up a podcast without opening a waveform. Transcription is the means, not the product.
Otter is a meeting assistant. It joins the call, records everyone, and gives you searchable notes afterwards. Transcription is the product.
If you came here to choose between them, the answer is usually just which of those two sentences describes your week.
Descript's problem is billing
Descript moved everyone off legacy plans in November 2025 onto a metered model built on two pools, media minutes and AI credits, with top-ups sold separately. Features that used to be included now draw down credits, long-standing subscribers report capacity quietly reduced, refunds hit a short window and canned replies, and Trustpilot sits at 2.7 with a large share of one-star reviews.
The tool is still excellent. The subscription is a month-to-month proposition now, not something to prepay.
Otter's problem is consent
Otter's auto-join is the convenient part and the legally interesting part. It records people who never agreed to be recorded, transcripts have gone to the wrong recipients, and the consolidated privacy litigation in the Northern District of California survived dismissal in part in August 2026. The claims run to federal wiretap law, California and Illinois privacy statutes, and Washington's privacy act.
That is not a reason nobody can use it. It is a reason to announce the bot, get agreement on the record, and never let it into a conversation involving health, legal or HR matters.
How we would buy it

- •Meeting notes for yourself only, with everyone informed: Otter's cheaper tier, or the recording feature already inside your video platform.
- •Meetings involving clients, patients, candidates or anything regulated: neither, without written consent and a policy. Assume every transcript is discoverable.
- •Just needing a transcript occasionally: both have free tiers that cover it. This does not have to be a subscription.
