What it actually does

Descript edits audio and video through the transcript. It transcribes your recording, shows you the text, and when you delete a word in the text the matching audio disappears from the file. Filler word removal works the same way, in one pass across an entire recording.

Around that core sit Overdub voice cloning for patching in a line you never recorded, automatic transcription, screen recording and Puppet video. Text-based editing is still the best idea in this category, and Descript executes it better than the tools that copied it. The concept is not the problem here.

What it costs

The free plan gives one hour of transcription a month with basic features. Hobbyist is $16 a month for 10 media hours and 400 AI credits, Creator is $24 for 30 hours and 800 credits, and Business is $50 for 40 hours and 1,500 credits.

The plan price is not the real number. AI features run on credits, and the recurring complaint is that the credits go fast and then the work stops until you buy a top-up. Trustpilot's own review summary for Descript states that AI credits "drain extremely fast and leave users unable to finish projects without purchasing expensive top-ups". One reviewer described the result as getting "either stuck or broke".

Capacity also appears to move underneath existing subscribers. A user on the same $30 a month plan for four years reports being able to produce far fewer videos per month than before. Same plan, same money, less work out the other end.

Where it falls down

Billing and support, and it is bad enough to drag a genuinely good editor down to 2.5.

Trustpilot has Descript at 2.7 out of 5 across 286 reviews, 42% of them one star, with 98 posted in the last twelve months. The company has replied to 4% of negative reviews.

Refunds are the sharpest complaint. There is a 48-hour refund window and reviewers describe hitting automated canned replies inside it. A September 2026 review reads: "I canceled my $37.26 subscription about one hour after purchasing it and immediately requested a refund. Despite their 48-hour refund policy, I kept receiving the same automated responses". Others say the money only arrived after they threatened a bank chargeback.

There are also reports of cancellation being hard to find at all ("You can't cancel it, there is no option") and of charges people say they never authorised ("Fraudulent charges on credit card. Never subscribed."). Those are user reports rather than findings we can independently confirm, but there are a lot of them and they are recent.

On the product side, a 2026 update changed templates and users report losing functionality they had been relying on. Bugs, crashes and lag come up regularly, and reviewers say support gives answers that do not match how the product actually behaves.

Note the split in the data before you weigh it. Capterra has Descript at 4.6 from 183 reviews and G2 at 4.6 from 922. The billing and support complaints concentrate on Trustpilot, which is where consumers go when they want their money back. Both sets of numbers are real and they are measuring different things.

Who should buy it

Podcasters and video creators who want to cut a talking-head recording quickly without learning a timeline editor. The tool works, and the people who like it like it a great deal.

Buy it monthly. Do not take an annual plan, because the reports say effective capacity can change while you hold the subscription and the refund path is hostile if you want out. Pay with a method you can dispute. Run one real project against the credit allowance before you commit further.

Do not buy it if your work cannot survive stopping mid-project when credits run out, or if you need predictable monthly capacity to plan a client schedule around. Anyone in that position is better off with a conventional editor plus a separate transcription service, where the capacity you paid for is the capacity you keep and nobody meters the export.
