What it actually does

HeyGen generates video of a talking avatar from a script. You type the words, pick an avatar, and it renders a person delivering them, with support marketed at 175 or more languages. Avatar cloning lets you build a digital version of yourself rather than using a stock presenter, and there is a script drafting step inside the platform so you are not writing elsewhere and pasting in.

The feature people actually rate is video translation. Upload an English video and HeyGen produces versions in other languages with lip-sync, which is the fastest route we know of to putting one piece of content in front of several audiences. Reviewers describe it as central to their content workflow, and for high-volume production that is a fair description of what it does.

What it costs

Creator is $24 a month, Business is $120 a month. The free tier is one credit, roughly three minutes of video, which is enough to see the avatar move and nothing more.

The credits are the real pricing story. Reviewers repeatedly report that credit consumption is faster than they expected and that the cost per credit is high relative to the finished video you get out of it. Budget from a test project, not from the plan page.

Mobile subscriptions have to be cancelled through Apple or Google rather than in the product, which catches people out, and refunds are policy-bound and applied rigidly.

Where it falls down

The split between review platforms is the most useful number on this page. HeyGen holds 4.8 from 1,968 reviews on G2 and 4.7 from 319 on Capterra, but 3.8 across roughly 3,450 reviews on Trustpilot. That gap is not random. Business buyers score the output and give it high marks. Self-serve consumers go to Trustpilot, and they go there about billing and support.

What they report is ugly. A verified Capterra review from May 2026 describes paying for an annual account, being charged twice, being unable to reach customer service, and losing the entire account along with stored videos. Unexpected subscription charges come up on Trustpilot as a recurring theme. Support not replying is the common thread through most of it, and a vendor that does not answer a double-charge email does not get the benefit of the doubt from us.

The output is also less consistent than the demos suggest. Reviewers report avatar voices that do not match the scene, avatars that read as unnatural in longer or more complex videos, weak background replacement, and platform bugs including slow processing on larger footage. One verified Capterra reviewer describes exactly that, noting much slower processing of large video files and produced images that missed the intended tone.

We found no acquisition, lawsuit or regulatory action against HeyGen in the time available. The problem here is operational, not legal.

Who should buy it

Marketing and training teams producing localized video at volume should look at it, because nothing else makes multi-language versions of one video this quickly. If your company is paying, your procurement has recourse, and the Business plan at $120 makes sense against the cost of reshooting in five languages.

Buy monthly. Do not take the annual upgrade until HeyGen has held your money and answered an email for a few cycles, because the annual switch is precisely where the double-charge reports cluster. If you are on mobile, subscribe through the web so you can cancel where you bought.

Individual creators on a tight budget should probably wait. Three minutes of free video will not tell you whether your credits last, the support record is poor, and losing an account with your stored videos in it costs you more than the subscription did. If you need avatar video occasionally, pay for a month, export everything you make, and cancel.
