What it actually does

Runway is an AI video platform aimed at people who already edit video for a living. Gen-3 Alpha does text-to-video and video-to-video, and around that sits a toolkit most generators do not have: Motion Brush for directing movement in a frame, AI green screen, inpainting for removing or replacing objects, and frame interpolation.

That depth is the argument for it. Competitors give you a prompt box and a render; Runway gives you controls that a professional can actually direct. Gen-4 improved character and object consistency between shots, which was the historic weak point of the whole category. G2 rates it 4.2 out of 5. Runway also has Hollywood-facing deals, and creatives working in short, curated shots do real, paid work in it.

What it costs

The free plan is 125 credits, roughly a minute of video, across 3 projects. Standard is $15 a month, Pro is $35, Unlimited is $95.

The catch is the credit accounting. Credits are spent on failed and unusable generations as well as good ones, and Runway stopped refunding credits for bad renders. You are paying per attempt in a medium where attempts are the work. Ars Technica made the arithmetic plain in March 2025: "because generating usable AI video is an act of curation, you probably can't generate too many usable videos with that amount." Even the top plans at roughly 2,250 credits a month do not buy enough retries for the way this software is actually used.

Users also describe the Unlimited plan as misleading, reporting hours of work for minimal satisfactory results and heavy throttling once they lean on it. "Unlimited" here means slower, not endless.

Where it falls down

Money for nothing, over and over. Trustpilot sits at 1.1 out of 5 across 333 reviews, one of the worst scores of any major AI tool, and the complaints are overwhelmingly about paying for output that could not be used. Refunds exist but reportedly require chasing support to get them.

Launch conduct is the second issue. Gen-4 appeared in the model picker on paid accounts marked "Soon" at launch, which Ars Technica confirmed at the time: "Gen-4 is listed as an option, but not yet usable, as of this article's publication." Users then described Gen-4 as an incremental catch-up to competitors rather than the leap it was sold as. If you upgraded a plan expecting the new model, you paid ahead of delivery twice over.

Then there is the training data. 404 Media reported that Runway's training data appears to include video scraped from YouTube channels and film studios, and artist copyright litigation is ongoing. That is unresolved, and we are not going to predict the outcome, but anyone using generated footage in commercial work should know the provenance question is live and not settled.

The rest is ordinary friction. The learning curve is steep, several features are still experimental, and free-plan credits are gone almost immediately.

Who should buy it

Filmmakers, VFX-adjacent creatives and studios doing short, curated shots, who have a budget line for failed renders, should buy it. They are the people the toolkit is built for and the reason the score is not lower.

Everyone else should stay away, and that includes most content creators and small marketing teams. If you are working to a fixed monthly budget, credits burned on unusable output will wreck it, and no plan tier fixes that because the misses are inherent to the medium, not to the plan you chose.

Do not buy Unlimited expecting unlimited. Do not buy any annual commitment here. Start on the $15 Standard plan, count how many credits it takes you to get one shot you would actually put in a cut, multiply, and decide from that number rather than from a demo reel.
