Runway is a real production tool with an editing suite professionals use, and it charges credits for failed and unusable generations while sitting near the floor of Trustpilot at 1.1. Pika is cheaper and fun and its subscribers report credits that never arrive and generations that hang while consuming them anyway. If you are not billing clients for this work, do not subscribe to either.

The shared problem
AI video is a slot machine with a subscription attached. You describe a shot, wait, and get something usable maybe one time in five. Both of these charge you for the four failures as well as the hit, and neither refunds the credits burned on output you cannot use.
That single mechanic should frame the whole decision. You are not buying minutes of video, you are buying attempts.
Runway
The deeper product by a distance. Beyond generation there is an editing suite, motion tools, and a workflow that professionals genuinely use on paid work. If you are producing something for a client, Runway is the one that can carry the job end to end.
Its record is poor anyway. Trustpilot sits at 1.1, which is close to the bottom of the scale, driven by credits consumed on failed generations and a decision to stop refunding them. There is also a proposed class action filed in Los Angeles federal court in February 2026 by a YouTube creator alleging Runway scraped YouTube videos for training, and 404 Media reported from an internal training-data spreadsheet that Gen-3 was trained on scraped creator videos and pirated films while a co-founder publicly described the data as curated internal datasets.
Pika
Cheaper, faster, more playful, and genuinely capable of producing something delightful. As a toy it is good value.
As a subscription it is not. Its Trustpilot profile shows 1.7 across seventy reviews with the overwhelming majority at one star, dominated by reports of credits disappearing, generations hanging and refunds refused. The profile is unclaimed and Pika has not replied to any of it. A vendor that does not answer its own complaint page is telling you what support will be like.
What we would actually do
Use the free tiers. Both have one. Generate until they run out, decide whether the output is anywhere near what you need, and only then consider paying. The gap between the marketing reels and what your prompts produce is the single biggest cost in this category, and it costs nothing to discover.
How we would buy it
- •Client work, agency work, anything with a deadline and a budget: Runway, monthly, with the credit burn modelled first.
- •Experimenting, social content, having fun: free tiers only.
- •Needing consistent characters or shots across a sequence: neither is reliable at this yet. Budget for reshoots or use a different technique.
- •On an annual plan with either: you bought a year of attempts at a price set before the model changed. Do not renew that way.
