What it actually does

Pika generates short video from text or from a still image. Type a prompt and you get a clip, three seconds by default and extendable. It also does video-to-video, lip sync, sound effects, and an Expand Video function, through either the web app or Discord.

The model itself is capable. Creative outlets including Curious Refuge have reviewed the Pika 2.2 era output as genuinely good, and the effects and editing features are the real draw for short-form social work. Clips are short, quality falls behind Runway on complex scenes, and credits run out quickly.

What it costs

Free starts you with 250 credits and limited features. Pro is $10 a month, Pro+ is $35, and Fancy is $70.

Pro looks like the cheapest serious AI video plan available, and that is exactly where the complaints concentrate. Pro subscribers report paying for 500 credits a week and managing only a handful of generations before running dry. There is no published policy on credit refunds for failed generations to fall back on.

The terms make the position worse. Pika's terms of service reserve the right to change pricing unilaterally, and they tell you that if you do not accept new pricing your only option is to cancel. You are on a metered product whose rate the vendor can move, with cancellation as your only remedy.

Where it falls down

Generations get stuck, and the credits are consumed anyway. That is the complaint that should stop a purchase. No documented rule covers failed jobs, so a hung render is your loss, and users report support being slow or silent on billing tickets.

Trustpilot sits at 1.7 out of 5 across roughly 70 reviews. Trustpilot blocked both direct fetch and browser access, so we rely on that score and count appearing identically in two independent search snippets, and 70 reviews is a small sample. Even discounted, it is the worst consumer trust profile in this batch, and it lines up with everything else in the record rather than contradicting it.

On Reddit, users on r/pika_ai describe the product as having become "money hungry", with more paywalling and less output per dollar than before. Outright scam accusations appear on both Trustpilot and Reddit. That word gets thrown around loosely, but it is unusual language for a legitimate paid tool and it is the biggest reputational problem Pika has.

The brand confusion makes it harder to even buy safely. Clone apps trading on the Pika name are collecting subscription money on the App Store. One listing we found, an "AI Pika Art" video generator, is not Pika's own app and its reviews are not Pika's rating. Search the App Store for this product and you may pay the wrong company.

There is also a cancellation friction complaint on top of the rest, which is the last thing a product with billing problems needs.

Who should buy it

Use the 250 free credits. If you make memes or short social clips and you want to see whether the effects fit your work, the free tier answers that question at no risk, and the model quality is good enough that you may enjoy it.

We do not think anyone should subscribe. The reported failure mode is paying for credits that do not arrive or get eaten by hung generations, with no refund policy, slow support, and terms that let the price move. For paid AI video with better output on complex scenes, Runway is where serious money should go.

If you do pay anyway, buy Pro at $10 and nothing above it, verify you are in the official app rather than a clone, and treat the month as money you might not get back.
