QuillBot

AI paraphrasing and writing refinement tool

4.0Worth pouringHow we score
Visit QuillBot →

QuillBot is the gold standard for AI-powered paraphrasing and text refinement. While it's not a full writing tool like Jasper or Writesonic, QuillBot excels at what it does: taking existing text and rewriting it in different tones, styles, and structures. The Summarizer tool condenses long articles into key points, and the Grammar Checker catches errors that other tools miss. The Premium plan at $9.95/month unlocks unlimited paraphrasing, advanced modes, and full summarizer access. For students, academic writers, and ESL writers who need to refine their prose, QuillBot is the best specialized tool available.

What changed, and what we found later

Rated 2026-09-16. Every note below was added after that date. Some are things the vendor changed since; others are older events we only turned up in a later pass. Each is dated by when it happened, not by when we found it, so a date earlier than the rating means we missed it first time round. They stay here rather than being quietly folded into the review.

QuillBot's owner Learneo was hit with a $75.3 million copyright verdict on 4 March 2026 in Post University Inc v. Learneo Inc (D. Conn., No. 3:21-cv-01242) over Course Hero hosting and altering university course files; Learneo says it will appeal.

What it actually does

QuillBot rewrites text you have already written. You paste a paragraph, pick a mode, and it hands back the same idea in different words with a different rhythm. That is the whole core product, and it does that one job better than the general writing suites that bolt a paraphrase button onto a draft generator.

Around the paraphraser sit a summarizer, a grammar checker, a citation generator and a word counter, plus a Chrome extension so you can use it inside whatever text box you happen to be in. It will not produce a first draft from a brief. Buy it expecting a full writing tool and you will be disappointed within a day.

What it costs

Premium runs $9.95 a month, or $6.25 a month if you pay for a year up front. That is cheap next to almost anything else in AI writing.

The free plan exists, but it is tight enough to be a demo rather than a working tier. Paraphrasing is limited and the summarizer caps at 125 words, which is shorter than most things you would actually want summarized. You cannot properly evaluate the tool on the free plan, which is presumably the point.

The cost most buyers miss is the renewal, and that leads straight into the next section.

Where it falls down

The refund handling is what keeps this off the top shelf. Users on Reddit's r/selfpublish report emailing repeatedly about an unwanted auto-renewal charge, getting no reply at all, and ending up filing a bank dispute to claw the money back. One angry customer is noise. Unanswered refund mail on a product that renews itself is a reason to diary the date.

Second, the output needs checking every time. Reviewers flag that both the paraphraser and the summarizer can distort meaning on technical text. The rewritten sentences come back fluent and confident, which is exactly what makes a shifted meaning easy to miss. Do not fire and forget on anything that matters.

Third, and this one is aimed at the group that uses it most: universities treat QuillBot-style paraphrasing as a route to plagiarism or academic misconduct, and detection tools flag it. The company's biggest audience is also the audience most exposed by using the product. That risk sits with you, not with the vendor.

Two notes on the numbers. QuillBot has been owned since 2021 by Learneo, the company formerly called Course Hero, which carries its own contested reputation in academia. And the headline 4.8 out of 5 comes from a paid Trustpilot profile carrying 14,114 reviews, of which 8,348 landed in the last twelve months. We are not calling the score fake. Eighty seven percent five-star against three percent one-star is a strong result, and the company replies to 100% of its negative reviews, which most vendors in this category cannot be bothered to do. A heavily worked review profile still deserves a footnote.

Who should buy it

ESL writers get the most value here, and it is not close. If English is your second language and you want your meaning preserved while the phrasing gets fixed, $6.25 a month is an easy call. The same goes for anyone whose thinking is clear but whose sentences come out clumsy.

Do not buy it as your main writing tool. It does not generate from scratch and has never claimed to. If you want long-form drafting, buy a writing suite and keep QuillBot for the rewrite pass, or skip it entirely.

Students should think harder than the marketing invites them to. The tool works well. Your institution may still treat its use as misconduct regardless of how well it works, so check your course rules before you subscribe, and if you are unsure, use the grammar checker and leave the paraphraser alone.

Whatever you buy, pay monthly for the first stretch and set a reminder before the annual renewal fires. Getting your money back afterwards is not a reliable option.

Our verdict

4.0Worth pouring

The paraphraser is genuinely good and 14,000 Trustpilot reviewers agree, which is rare in this category. Watch two things: it distorts meaning on technical text, so never fire and forget, and refund emails go unanswered often enough to show up as a pattern.
