What changed, and what we found later

Rated 2026-09-16. Every note below was added after that date. Some are things the vendor changed since; others are older events we only turned up in a later pass. Each is dated by when it happened, not by when we found it, so a date earlier than the rating means we missed it first time round. They stay here rather than being quietly folded into the review.

Writesonic has repositioned from an AI writing tool into an 'AI Search Visibility Platform'; its own pricing page now starts at $79/month (Starter), with $199 and $399 tiers and no cheap entry-level AI-writer plan. Old advice citing low-cost writing plans is out of date.

What it actually does

Writesonic used to be a cheap AI writing tool. As of mid-2025 it repositioned as an "AI Search Visibility Platform," and that is now the pitch. The new product tracks how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity crawl and cite your site, monitors prompts and sentiment, watches competitors, and reports on AI bot activity. The writing tools are still in there, along with the SEO optimizer, Chatsonic, bulk generation, landing pages and WordPress publishing, but they are no longer what the company sells.

If you arrived expecting a $13-a-month copywriter, the product you were looking for is not the product being sold. That single fact matters more than any feature comparison below.

What it costs

This is where it gets ugly. The free plan still offers 10,000 words a month for one user. The legacy writing plans were $13 a month for an individual and $16 per seat for teams. The current public pricing page lists Starter at $79 on annual billing and a $199 Basic tier, and reviewers put the real entry point for the AI-visibility product at $249 a month, with most of the AI-search features needing $499 a month or Enterprise.

Nick Lafferty, writing for Profound in November 2025, put it bluntly: with a starting fee of $249 a month, Writesonic is one of the priciest AI visibility tools. Profound is a direct Writesonic competitor, so weigh that accordingly, but the pricing page corroborates the direction of travel. A product that started at $13 now asks six times that for its cheapest annual plan.

The catch is feature gating. Opportunity detection and action recommendations, the parts that turn a visibility dashboard into something you can act on, sit behind Enterprise. You can pay $79 and still not get the thing the marketing describes.

Where it falls down

The writing quality did not rise to meet the new price. Profound's hands-on review found the briefs and drafts unoriginal and not humanlike, which is the same criticism the tool attracted when it cost $13. Paying more for the same mediocre output is the core problem with this purchase.

Reviewers also report thin integrations and raise doubts about enterprise-grade security and compliance, which is awkward for a company now selling to enterprises. Third-party reviews reference billing complaints as a minority pattern; we did not read those on a primary source, so we are not asserting them.

Company strength is a real concern. Writesonic has raised roughly $2.6 million across two seed rounds, with the last raise in 2022, and it is now competing against AI-visibility startups that have raised tens of millions. That is thin capitalization for the category it chose to enter, and it raises a fair question about who is still building this in two years.

The public ratings look great and should be read with that context. G2 shows 4.7 from 2,134 reviews with 85 percent five-star and only 1 percent one-star, which we read on the page, and Trustpilot is reported at 4.6 from 5,763 reviews, though Trustpilot blocks extraction and we took that from a search snippet. Most of that goodwill was earned by the cheap writing tool. G2's own product description now reads as an AI-search-visibility tool. The reviews and the product are no longer describing the same thing, and that is why this sits at 2.0.

Who should buy it

Nobody on the strength of the writing, and very few on the strength of the visibility suite. If you already run a mature SEO program, have budget above $249 a month, and specifically want prompt and citation tracking plus AI bot analytics in one place, it is worth a demo. Ask directly which features your tier includes before you sign, in writing.

Bloggers, freelancers and small content teams should look elsewhere. The $13 plan that made Writesonic worth recommending is gone, and at current prices a general AI assistant plus a real SEO tool costs less and does both jobs better. Anyone shopping AI visibility specifically should get quotes from the better-funded competitors first, because you are buying a multi-year data relationship from a company that last raised money in 2022.

Our verdict

2.0Flat

Writesonic stopped being a cheap writing tool and became an "AI search visibility platform" that starts at $79 a month and wants $249 for the features it advertises. The writing quality did not improve to match. If you came here for the old $13 plan, it is gone.
