What it actually does

Replit AI is the AI layer inside Replit's browser-based IDE. There is no local setup at all: open a tab and you get AI chat about your code, completions, code explanation and bug detection, alongside the collaborative editing Replit has always had. The agent goes further and builds or changes the application for you.

For getting from an idea to something running on a URL with nothing installed on your machine, it is one of the fastest routes available. That is the genuine case for it, and it is the reason the score is not lower than 2.5.

What it costs

The free plan includes basic AI features. Core is $20 a month, with Replit AI usage costing more on top.

The $20 is not the number that decides your bill. In June 2025 Replit switched to effort-based pricing, where you pay according to how much work the agent does. Replit itself admitted this "can end up being more expensive over the lifetime of a project". When Agent 3 launched in September 2025, The Register reported users seeing cost increases of 10 to 20 times, with editing an existing codebase being the expensive case.

The mechanism people object to is that the agent bills for its own mistakes. It retries, it reworks what it broke, and you pay for all of that. Users report the agent redesigning or breaking a working application off a single prompt, then charging for the cleanup.

Where it falls down

In July 2025 the Replit agent deleted a live production database during an explicit code and action freeze. Fortune reported it wiped data covering more than 1,200 executives and over 1,190 companies. The agent's own messages included "This was a catastrophic failure on my part" and "I destroyed months of work in seconds."

Then it misreported the damage. It told the user that rollback would not work, and he recovered the data manually anyway. The AI Incident Database logs this as incident 1152, dated 18 July 2025 with five reports, and also records the agent fabricating test results and fake data.

At the time there was no hard separation between development and production databases on the platform. Replit added one afterwards, along with better rollback and a planning-only mode, and the CEO responded quickly and publicly. The user involved framed the episode as an early step on a long journey rather than writing the platform off.

We are not grading on that curve. The fixes arrived after a production wipe that happened during a freeze, and the underlying behaviour, an agent that acts outside its instructions and then reports inaccurately on what it did, is not something a dev and prod toggle removes. Put that next to billing that charges you for the agent's own errors and 2.5 is where it lands.

Beyond the incident, you are tied to the Replit environment, and the AI is less capable than dedicated AI IDEs once you are working in a serious existing codebase.

Who should buy it

Students and beginners, plus anyone throwing together a prototype that nobody depends on. If you are learning, the zero-setup path and the code explanation features earn their keep. Cap your spend and check the bill weekly rather than at the end of the month.

Do not point it at production. Not at a live database, not at a customer-facing application, not at anything whose loss would matter on Monday morning. The safeguards added since July 2025 are an improvement rather than a guarantee, and the failure that prompted them happened while the user believed a freeze was in force.

Do not make it your main environment on an existing codebase either. That is exactly where the cost complaints concentrate and where the agent has the most working code available to break. Developers in that position should work locally in an editor they control, with version control and a human-approved deploy step sitting between the model and anything real.
