What it actually does
Speechify reads text aloud. You point it at a PDF, a web article, an email, an ebook, or a photo of a physical book page, and it speaks the contents. There is OCR for scanned material, playback speed with a time-to-finish estimate, a sleep timer, background audio, multi-device sync, and a browser extension. Celebrity voices, Snoop Dogg and Gwyneth Paltrow among them, are the novelty.
This is a listening tool, not a voiceover tool, and that distinction decides whether you should be here at all. Within its own purpose the product is very well liked. The iOS app holds 4.7 out of 5 across 524,000 ratings, and Trustpilot shows 4.7 across 6,997 reviews. Users with dyslexia and ADHD describe it as genuinely life-changing, and students report finishing coursework they otherwise could not get through. Any review that leads with "users hate it" is wrong.
What it costs
There is a free tier with basic text to speech and a limited voice set. Premium is $11.99 a month. Pro is $139 a year and is annual only, with no monthly option.
Two catches. The first is a word limit that users say nobody warned them about. Once you hit the monthly cap, premium voices cut off and you are left with a robotic fallback. One App Store review titled "Beware Monthly Word Limit" says: "Within about two weeks I hit the monthly word limit and am now unable to really use the service." The thing you paid for is metered in a way that is not obvious at purchase.
The second catch is the free trial. Users report being billed $24.99 or more within minutes of starting what was presented as a three-day free trial.
Where it falls down
Both of these facts are true at the same time, and a buyer needs both. The app is rated 4.7 by half a million people, and Speechify Inc holds an F from the Better Business Bureau and is not accredited. Those are not in conflict. People like the product and report being badly treated by the billing.
The BBB file, opened on 11 February 2025, records 90 complaints in the last three years, 20 closed in the last twelve months. Of those, 17 are classed as billing and 11 as sales and advertising, and nine went entirely unanswered. The F grade and its stated reason, failure to respond to 9 complaints out of 90 filed, appeared in a search snippet rather than our page extract, though the nine-unanswered figure matches what we read directly.
The pattern inside those complaints is concentrated in subscriptions and refunds, which is the classic dark-pattern profile. Users report being charged after cancelling, on accounts they can prove sit on free status. A BBB complainant wrote on 14 August 2026: "I have canceled speechify months ago and they still keep charging me and I don't know what else to do." Refund requests bounce between parties, with Speechify saying the app store must issue the refund and the store saying it cannot, leaving the user holding the charge. Support is described as running people in circles. Trustpilot's own summary flags ambiguous experiences with subscriptions even while the average sits at 4.7, and the written App Store reviews we saw complain about word caps and billing rather than the reading itself.
On the product, users report mispronunciations, skipped words in long-form reading, and occasional glitchiness. Voice control is limited.
Who should buy it
If reading is hard for you, this tool is worth having, and the free tier is where to start. Get a real sense of how much you listen in a month before you consider paying.
If you do pay, pay in a way you can shut off. We would not leave a card on file here, and we would not start a free trial expecting three free days. Pro is annual only at $139, so a bad experience costs a year rather than a month.
Do not buy it for voiceover production. That is a different job and ElevenLabs does it properly.
