What it actually does

Stable Diffusion is an open-weights image model you can download and run on your own hardware. No per-image gatekeeping, no account, no prompts leaving your machine. Around it sits the largest tooling ecosystem in AI imaging: ControlNet for pose and composition control, LoRA for fine-tuning on your own data, and thousands of community models on HuggingFace and Civitai.

Stability AI, the company that released it, also sells hosted access through an API. That is the paid product. The models themselves stay free, which creates an odd situation where the company's most valuable output to its users is the thing it gives away.

What it costs

Nothing, if you self-host. You need a capable GPU and enough technical comfort to install and maintain the stack, and that is the whole bill. API access runs roughly $0.01 to $0.04 per image if you would rather not run hardware.

The catch is what you are buying when you pay. Paid API and DreamStudio customers report that they are paying for something the community hands out for free, which is a fair reading if your volume is modest and you own a decent graphics card. Work out your monthly image count first. Below a few thousand images a month the API is convenient; above that, local generation is usually the cheaper and more private path.

Where it falls down

The model is not the risk. The company is. Founding CEO Emad Mostaque quit in March 2024, and several senior researchers left to found Black Forest Labs, documented by Courthouse News. Financial trouble has been documented and a potential sale reported since that exit. If your business plan depends on Stability existing and supporting you in three years, that is an uncomfortable bet, and users on r/LocalLLaMA openly debate whether Stability is the next AI startup to die while noting the company is valuable to them mainly because it releases free models.

Then there is litigation. In Getty Images v Stability AI, the UK High Court handed down judgment on 4 November 2025 ([2025] EWHC 2863 (Ch)). Getty's secondary copyright claim was rejected, on the basis that the model does not store training data, which is a meaningful win for the open-weights side of the argument. But Getty partially won on trade mark infringement, over Getty watermarks appearing in Stable Diffusion outputs, and the court held Stability responsible rather than the user writing the prompt. Getty reportedly raised its damages claim to as much as $1.7 billion during the case, per Sifted.

License and monetization changes on model releases have repeatedly angered the open-source and artist community that built the ecosystem in the first place, which is worth knowing if you plan to depend on the license terms of a future release.

The review base for the paid service is close to useless: 10 reviews on G2 at 4.3, and 15 on Trustpilot averaging 1.8. Image quality from text prompts is the consistent praise on G2, and CNET scored it 7 out of 10 and still calls it a household name in AI images. Who should buy it

Developers and technical artists with a GPU should absolutely use it. It is the only serious option if you need full customization, offline operation, or prompts that never leave your network. The fine-tune ecosystem has no equivalent anywhere else, and it costs nothing.

Do not pay Stability for hosted generation unless you have a specific reason not to self-host. Do not build a commercial product whose only supplier is this company, given the leadership exits and reported financial trouble. And if you are a non-technical user who just wants good pictures without installing anything, this is the wrong tool entirely; buy a hosted generator with a support desk and move on.
