What it actually does

Midjourney generates images from text, and its output still has a look nothing else quite reproduces: painterly, stylised, heavy on mood. Where competitors chase photorealism, Midjourney kept its own aesthetic and holds it consistently across generations, which is the entire reason art directors keep an account open.

The toolset is more than a prompt box. Image-to-image, style references for holding a visual identity across a set, Vary Region for redoing part of a frame, plus Pan and Zoom for extending a composition past its original borders. The v6 model handles text rendering and complex scenes well. It remains Discord-first, with a web app rolling out. Cybernews described the Discord workflow in January 2026 as "a leftover from early adoption, functional, but not user-friendly," and also wrote that "it still feels relevant, not because it adapted to the market, but because it refused to". Both halves of that are true at once.

What it costs

There is no free plan. Basic is $10 a month, Standard is $30, Pro is $60.

The catch is not the price, it is the exit. Users report being billed for months, in some cases a full year, after cancelling. Cancellation is buried and unintuitive enough that Reddit threads exist purely to explain the one path that actually works. If you subscribe, cancel early, screenshot the confirmation and watch your statement for the next two cycles. We do not normally have to write that sentence in a review.

Where it falls down

Support, billing and account handling. Trustpilot sits at 1.5 out of 5 across 372 reviews, and the negative reviews are dominated by money and silence rather than image quality.

The reported pattern is consistent. Charges continue after cancellation. The only recourse is emailing [email protected] and waiting, with users describing a week or more without a reply. There is no phone line and no live channel of any kind, so a billing dispute is a one-way message into a queue. BBB complaints cover both the continued charges and unexplained account bans.

The bans are their own problem. Users report being given a generic list of possible reasons with no statement of which one applied, and no meaningful appeal. For a hobbyist that is annoying. For anyone with client work, a prompt library and a style reference set inside that account, it is a business risk you cannot insure against, because you cannot find out what you did or argue that you did not do it.

Pricing shows up repeatedly in negative reviews as well, mostly from people who feel the subscription does not match the value they get, which bites harder when there is no free tier to test against first. And the Discord dependence still means no proper desktop app, awkward file management and a workflow that new users find hostile.

That is why a tool with genuinely best-in-class output lands at 3.0. The images are excellent. Everything surrounding them, from paying to leaving to asking a human for help, is worse than software costing the same in any other category.

Who should buy it

Digital artists and designers who need a distinctive stylised look, and who can live with Discord, should buy the Basic plan at $10 and keep it month to month. The output justifies the money. The company does not justify a year of it up front.

Do not buy it if you need dependable customer support, a clean desktop workflow, or an account you can rely on continuing to exist. Do not buy it if you are building a business process that would break the week your access disappears.

Anyone who mainly needs photoreal product or marketing imagery, rather than art direction, is better served elsewhere. Midjourney's strength is a specific aesthetic, and if that is not what you need, you are paying for a house style you will spend prompts fighting.
