The split is clean

Midjourney is still the best in the category for stylised, painterly, art-directed imagery. Nothing else quite matches its look, which is why people keep paying for it despite everything below.

Ideogram's advantage is narrow and enormously practical: text inside the image. Typography in generated images is a genuinely hard problem, most models produce something that looks like letters from a distance, and Ideogram gets actual words right often enough to use the output directly. For a thumbnail, a poster, an ad or a logo concept, that is the whole job.

What each one costs you in practice

Midjourney has no free trial at all, confirmed in its own documentation, so evaluating it means paying first. Ideogram has a usable free tier with a daily image allowance on a slow queue, which is enough to test whether it does what you need.

The paid tiers land in a similar range, and both charge in ways that make heavy use more expensive than the headline. Neither is a big-ticket decision.

The company records

Midjourney's is the worse of the two. Trustpilot sits at 1.5, built on people billed after cancelling, support that does not reply for weeks, and accounts banned with a generic list of possible reasons and no appeal that works. Disney and Universal sued it for copyright infringement in Los Angeles federal court in June 2025, and Midjourney is contesting the suit.

Ideogram's record is almost nonexistent in the other direction: two unclaimed G2 reviews and a handful on Product Hunt. We rate the output because there is no company evidence to rate. That is a different kind of risk, and an honest one to state rather than paper over.

• •Worried about commercial rights for client work: read both sets of terms yourself. The litigation around training data is unresolved and neither vendor's marketing is where you should learn about it.
