Quality is not the only axis
If you put one Midjourney image next to one Leonardo image, Midjourney usually wins. That is real and it is why the comparison exists at all.
Now put a month of work next to a month of work. Leonardo gives you a generous daily free allowance, a library of fine-tuned models for specific looks, real-time canvas editing and control over the generation rather than just the prompt. Midjourney gives you a better single image and no way to try it without paying.
For production work where you iterate, the controllable tool wins more often than the prettier one.
The Canva thing
Leonardo was acquired by Canva in 2024 and now operates inside it. Plans and pricing were unchanged at the time. If you are already a Canva user that is a convenience; if you are wary of a design giant owning your generation tool, it is a consideration. Either way you should know it, because Leonardo's own marketing does not lead with it.
The billing records
Leonardo's Trustpilot score is 4.6, which almost nothing else in AI image generation manages. The caveat inside it is billing confusion and surprise auto-renewals, which is the same complaint the whole category attracts.
Midjourney's is 1.5, and the complaints are heavier: charges after cancelling, weeks of support silence, and account bans issued with a list of possible reasons rather than the actual one. Losing access to a paid account with no appeal is a different order of problem from a confusing renewal.
Where Midjourney is still the answer
Art direction. If you are producing a set of images with a consistent, distinctive, painterly style and the look is the product, Midjourney is worth the aggravation and everybody in that work already knows it. Buy it monthly.
