WordTune
AI rewriting tool for natural language refinement
WordTune by AI21 Labs is a focused AI rewriting tool that helps you refine your writing in real-time. Unlike full writing assistants, WordTune doesn't generate content from scratch — it takes what you've written and suggests alternative ways to express it, with options for casual, formal, shorter, longer, or more engaging tones. The Chrome extension works in any text field on any website. The free plan gives 10 rewrites per day, while the Plus plan at $10/month offers 30 rewrites and the Unlimited at $30/month offers unlimited rewrites. For professionals, ESL writers, and anyone who wants to sound more polished in emails and documents, WordTune is a excellent complement to your existing AI writing tools.

What changed, and what we found later
Rated 2026-09-16. Every note below was added after that date. Some are things the vendor changed since; others are older events we only turned up in a later pass. Each is dated by when it happened, not by when we found it, so a date earlier than the rating means we missed it first time round. They stay here rather than being quietly folded into the review.

AI21 Labs stopped active development of Wordtune in April 2025 and, per Calcalist reporting, cut roughly 110 of ~180 staff in May 2026 while pivoting to its Maestro enterprise product. The Wordtune site is still online but the product is effectively in maintenance.

What it actually does
The first thing to know is not a feature. WordTune's owner, AI21 Labs, reportedly stopped active development of the product in April 2025, and later cut roughly 110 of about 180 staff (reported May 2026), refocusing the company on its Maestro agent product. Turing Post, which we read on the page, notes that "Wordtune's public site also remained online, although reporting says active development ended in April 2025." The site and the paid plans are still live and still taking money. We could only partially verify this, because the Calcalist report on the halt was behind a geo or paywall block and the relevant wording was visible only in a search snippet. Turing Post is the readable source.
What it does, for as long as it does it: WordTune rewrites text you have already written. Paste or type a sentence and it suggests alternatives, with controls for casual or formal tone, shorter or longer, plus a Spice It Up option for something less flat. A Chrome extension puts it in any text field, and it works inside Google Docs and Gmail. It does not generate content from scratch and never claimed to.
What it costs
Free plan gives 10 rewrites a day. Plus is $10 a month for 30 rewrites, Unlimited is $30 a month. Capterra lists a starting price of $9.99.
The billing terms are the part to read. WordTune's own billing policy and terms of use say it does not offer refunds or credits for partial subscription periods. No refunds, and no exceptions described. You can cancel before the next renewal and that is the entire remedy available to you. The terms also say price changes apply automatically at the next billing cycle, again with no refund route if you object.
Combine those terms with a product whose development reportedly stopped. You are prepaying a company that has told you in writing it will not give the money back, for a tool nobody is building anymore.
Where it falls down
The abandonment is the whole review. A frozen tool does not break on day one, it decays: browser updates change how extensions inject into pages, sites change their editors, and nobody ships a fix. Buyers are purchasing a maintained-but-frozen product at full price with no refund path.
The second problem is that the core value has been commoditised. Paraphrasing and tone adjustment is now free in every general chatbot. Paying $10 or $30 a month for rewriting alone was defensible in 2023 and is not now, particularly against a vendor that has moved its engineers elsewhere. The feature set is narrow by design, limited to rewriting, and 10 rewrites a day on free runs out quickly.
The reviews are the awkward part, and we will not pretend otherwise. Capterra shows 4.4 across 82 reviews with sentiment at 88% positive, 4% neutral and 9% negative, with the page last updated September 4, 2026. People liked this tool. The browser, Docs and Gmail integration, the rewrite and tone controls and the grammar checking all worked. Two other figures circulate, G2 at 4.6 across 196 reviews and Trustpilot at 4.2 across 579, and we could not confirm either on the platform itself, so treat them as unverified. Good scores on a product nobody is developing tell you about the past.
Who should buy it
Nobody should start a paid subscription now. That is the recommendation, and the 1.5 score reflects it.
If you are already subscribed and the extension does what you need, keep using it until it breaks, but move to monthly billing if you are on annual and set a reminder before renewal, because there is no refund waiting for you. Non-native English writers and professionals polishing email, the people this served well, should use the free tier of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini for rewriting, or Grammarly if an always-on editor is the point. All of them are being actively developed. This one reportedly is not.
Our verdict
1.5FlatAI21 reportedly stopped active development in April 2025 and cut most of the staff, while the site and the paid plans stay live. Their own policy is no refunds, ever, and price changes apply automatically at the next cycle. Paying a subscription to an abandoned product is how you fund someone else's exit.
