The bundling argument

Gemini's advantage is not that it beats ChatGPT on quality. It is that a large number of people already pay Google for storage and therefore already have the paid assistant sitting inside Gmail, Docs and Android. Paying $20 a month on top of that for a second assistant is a decision most people never actually made, they just kept the subscription they started first.

Where each one is better

ChatGPT is stronger on complex multi-step reasoning, on the ecosystem around the model, and on the thing it has always been best at: being asked a vague question and producing something useful anyway. Gemini is stronger on anything touching Google's own data, on video understanding, and on speed.

The complaints run in different directions too. Gemini's are regressions after model updates and refusals that send you back to Search, which is infuriating in a paid product. ChatGPT's are retired models and moving limits.

The parts Google does not advertise

•Thele v. Google, a proposed class action in the Northern District of California, alleged Google switched Gemini on by default across Gmail, Chat and Meet and used it to reach private communications. It was dismissed on standing with leave to amend, so the allegations were never tested on the merits. The default-on behaviour is the part worth knowing about.
•The upsell path through Google One is genuinely confusing, and people land on storage plans they did not intend to buy in order to get the assistant. Read the tier you are about to select rather than the one the upgrade screen highlights.

And the part OpenAI does not

ChatGPT's free tier now carries advertising, rolled out through 2026. The paid tier does not, today. Free-tier users comparing the two should factor that in.

•Already on a paid Google One tier: use Gemini for a month and see whether you miss ChatGPT. Most people do not miss it enough to pay.
•Living in ChatGPT daily for work: keep it. The switching cost of your prompts, projects and habits is real money.
•Paying for both: that is a $480 a year assistant budget for one person. Pick one.
•Wanting the best model for writing specifically: neither. That is Claude.
