What it actually does

Gemini is Google's assistant, and the thing that separates it from ChatGPT and Claude is live web access. It searches Google in real time and returns current answers with citations attached, rather than answering from a frozen training set. It also reads images, understands audio, writes code, and generates images through Imagen.

Inside Google Workspace it drafts in Gmail, writes in Docs and works over data in Sheets. That integration across Gmail, Drive, Calendar and Android is the one advantage no rival can bolt on, and reviewers consistently put Gemini ahead on video generation. PCMag's comparison called it "objectively a much better value, with deep connections across Google's ecosystem and class-leading video generation abilities."

What it costs

There is a free tier that works with any Google account, with message limits. Gemini Advanced is $20 a month and is included with Google One.

That bundle is the catch buyers miss. The upsell to AI Pro and Ultra runs through Google One, which is the same place people manage cheap storage plans. Users report that upgrading from a low storage tier can wipe or prorate the remaining plan, and several report discovering a $20 a month AI Pro charge they had not intended to keep, with the downgrade path buried. If all you wanted was more Drive space, read the plan screen twice before confirming.

The other cost is instability. Models and plans change fast and repeatedly, so the product this review describes may not be the product you get next month.

Where it falls down

The loudest recurring theme among people who paid is regression. Users say Gemini got measurably dumber over time and now refuses or deflects requests it used to handle. One reported refusal is being told to use Google Search instead for a question as basic as who the US president is.

Users also report inconsistent answers to the same question and confidently wrong factual output. A common complaint is that the consumer app is noticeably worse than the same models in AI Studio, which people read as the app being throttled or over-filtered. Voice input mishears repeatedly, and the assistant then answers the wrong question. App Store reviewers say the UI redesigns made the app slower.

There is also a documented content failure. In February 2024 Google publicly apologized and paused Gemini's image generation of people after it produced historically inaccurate depictions, including racially diverse Nazi-era soldiers. The Verge reported that Google apologized for what it described as "inaccuracies in some historical image generation depictions."

Against all that, the store numbers are extraordinary at scale: 4.6 across roughly 45.9 million Google Play reviews and 4.7 across about 210,000 reviews on the UK App Store, and it has topped the iOS free-app chart. Mass ratings that high are not nothing, even if the vocal minority is right about the regressions. For complex reasoning and coding it still trails GPT-4o, and generic answers are a fair criticism.

Who should buy it

If you already pay Google One, buy it, or rather notice you already have it. The value math is hard to argue with and the Workspace integration removes a second tool. Android users and anyone doing video work should be on it.

Do not buy it as your primary tool for hard reasoning or serious coding. Use ChatGPT or Claude for that and keep Gemini for research with live sources, Workspace drafting and multimodal work. And do not buy Advanced on a storage plan you cannot easily reverse. Check the cancel path before you check out, because the complaint volume around that flow is high enough to take seriously.
