Claude writes and codes better than Gemini and is worth paying for separately when the quality of the output is the job. Gemini is the better value by a distance if you already pay Google for storage, and it is better at video and at anything touching your Gmail and Docs. Buy Claude deliberately, and check whether you are paying twice.

Check your Google One plan first
A lot of people paying for a second assistant are already paying for Gemini inside a Google One tier they bought for storage. That is the first thing to check, because it decides whether this comparison costs you anything at all.
If Gemini covers your needs, the $20 you save is a real $240 a year.
What Claude is better at
Long-form writing, editing, and code. The difference is not subtle on anything over a few hundred words: Claude holds an argument together, keeps a voice, and does not pad. For drafting, rewriting and reasoning over long documents it is the best of the mainstream assistants.
It is also the most likely to stop you. Anthropic layers weekly limits on top of rolling five-hour windows, sells overage at API rates, and has tightened the limits repeatedly. The 4.6 on G2 and the 1.5 on Trustpilot are the same product described by people who did and did not hit the wall.
What Gemini is better at
Integration and video. It is inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Android, it handles video understanding better than anything else at this price, and it is fast. When the task touches Google's own data, nothing else competes.
Its complaints are regressions after model updates and refusals that send you back to Search, which is a particularly annoying failure in something you pay for. There is also the Thele v. Google proposed class action, dismissed on standing with leave to amend, which alleged Gemini was switched on by default across Gmail, Chat and Meet. The default-on behaviour is worth knowing regardless of how the case ends.
The honest split
Neither company is careful with your data in the way you would like. Anthropic settled the authors' class action over training on pirated books for $1.5 billion. Google is being sued over turning an assistant on inside private communications. Pick on fit and keep anything genuinely confidential out of both.

- •Hitting Claude's limits every day: model the API cost before buying a higher tier. Heavy users often pay less through the API than through the subscription ladder.
