What you are actually buying
A monthly credit pool spent at API rates, plus unlimited use of auto-routed models only.
Do the maths
- =The subscription price is a credit allowance, not a cap: overage is charged on top.
- =Only the auto-routed models are unlimited. Choosing a specific premium model moves you onto the metered pool.

Where the bill surprises people

- !Refund requests on annual plans reportedly hit an AI support wall.
- !'Unlimited' applies only to the models Cursor picks for you, which is not the same as unlimited use of the good ones.
Worth it if
You do agent work daily, want the best agentic editor available, and you set a spend cap and pay monthly.
Not worth it if
You mostly want tab completion. You are paying an agent price for a completion habit, and Copilot is cheaper.

Cursor is the best agentic editor we can point at. That is not in dispute here and it is why people put up with the rest.
What the subscription buys changed in June 2025: the Pro plan's request allowance became a credit pool billed at API rates, with unlimited use only of models Cursor routes to automatically. If you select a specific premium model, you are spending from the pool.
Why the auto-routing detail matters
The word unlimited is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Unlimited auto-routed usage means Cursor decides which model handles your request, optimising partly for its own costs. The moment you care which model you are getting, which is most of the time on hard problems, you are metered.
Read any plan comparison with that in mind. Two products can both say unlimited and mean entirely different things.
The behaviour, not the product
Anysphere changed the deal on people who had already paid. It apologised, which is more than most, and it offered refunds for surprise usage charges. Annual subscribers who wanted out reportedly met an AI support agent rather than a human.
None of that makes the editor worse. It tells you exactly one thing, and it is the thing worth acting on: pay monthly.
What we would do
- •Buy it monthly with a spend cap set from day one.
- •Watch your first month's actual consumption before assuming the second month looks the same.
- •If you find yourself only using tab completion, cancel and buy something cheaper. You are not using what you are paying for.
