What changed, and what we found later

Rated 2026-09-16. Every note below was added after that date. Some are things the vendor changed since; others are older events we only turned up in a later pass. Each is dated by when it happened, not by when we found it, so a date earlier than the rating means we missed it first time round. They stay here rather than being quietly folded into the review.

Canva's current pricing page no longer states fixed Magic Studio credit counts; AI access is a vague shared 'AI allowance' expressed as multiples of Free (Free capped at ~20 uses), with a paid 'AI Pass' add-on and top-ups sold separately.

Canva's help centre confirms the allowance model: Standard AI tools draw from the shared monthly allowance on Free and Pro Lite, and the allowance resets on the billing date rather than as a published credit number.

What it actually does

Magic Studio is the set of AI features Canva has added on top of its regular editor. Magic Write generates text inside a design. Magic Eraser takes objects out of a photo. Magic Expand extends an image past its original borders, Magic Resize reformats a design for a different aspect ratio, Magic Design suggests layouts from what you upload, and there is an AI photo editor alongside them.

None of it is standalone. You use these inside Canva, on top of the template library, which is the actual reason people are there. The AI features feel bolted on to an editor that already worked, and for the intended audience that is acceptable, because the editor already worked.

What it costs

Basic Magic features come with the free plan. Canva Pro is $12.99 a month. Canva Teams is $30 per seat per month.

The catch a buyer misses is that AI generation is metered as "premium AI uses" per month, so heavy Magic Studio users hit a ceiling partway through the billing cycle. That is a recurring user grievance, but we could not verify a primary-source number for the allowance, so treat the specific limit as unconfirmed and check it before you build a workflow on it.

The bigger catch is price stability. In September 2024 Canva force-migrated Teams subscribers on legacy plans to per-seat pricing. The Verge reported some US teams going from $119.99 a year for five users to $500 a year, just over 300% more. Canva's communications lead told The Verge the change was "to reflect the current price of the plan and the value of our expanded product experience", which means you were billed for Magic Studio whether you asked for it or not.

Where it falls down

That increase went out by email rather than a public announcement, so plenty of subscribers found out when the bill changed. The Verge reported users condemning the increases, with some announcing they would cancel and move to Adobe applications. The Verge also noted the hikes came ahead of a potential US public listing, worth holding in mind if you are forecasting next year's software budget.

Trustpilot reviewers make a quieter complaint that keeps recurring: most of the genuinely useful content is gated behind premium, so the free plan works as a funnel more than a product.

On capability, professional designers run out of control fast. Fine typographic and layout adjustment is limited compared with a real design tool, and complex projects get slow.

Canva also acquired Affinity from Serif in March 2024 for a reported several hundred million pounds, so the company selling the cheap browser editor now owns a chunk of the desktop alternative people were told to switch to.

Who should buy it

Small business owners and social media managers who need acceptable-looking output without hiring a designer. Trustpilot sits at 4.0 across 7,187 reviews for Canva overall, and the consistent praise is that the editor is easy, intuitive and affordable. Magic Studio is the least annoying AI bolt-on in this category, which is a low bar that it does clear.

Do not buy Teams on the assumption the price holds. Canva has already forced one migration and pointed at AI value to justify it. Budget for it moving again, and if you are on a legacy plan, read the emails.

Do not buy it at all if you are a working designer who needs precise control, or if your team already pays for Adobe. Nothing in Magic Studio justifies a second subscription on top of that.

If you are on Pro mainly for the AI features, watch your premium AI uses across one full month before you commit to annual billing. If you are burning the allowance by week three, you are paying $12.99 a month for a text generator you can get elsewhere with fewer limits, and the design templates are the only thing you are really buying.

Our verdict

3.5Worth pouring

For non-designers this is still the easiest way to get something acceptable out the door, and the AI features are the least annoying implementation of the lot. Canva also raised Teams pricing by just over 300% for some legacy plans, announced it by email, and pointed at Magic Studio as the justification. Good product, and the price is not done moving.
