What Windsurf Actually Costs in 2026
Credits are gone, quotas are in, and old subscribers pay a different price to new ones.
What you are actually buying
Daily and weekly usage quotas rather than credits, with overage purchased at API pricing.

Worth it if
You want a capable AI editor without paying, or you are grandfathered on an old price and it still works for you.
Not worth it if
You work in bursts. Daily quotas suit steady use and penalise the way most people actually ship.
Quotas are not credits, and the difference matters
Windsurf retired credit-based billing in March 2026 under Cognition and replaced it with daily and weekly usage quotas, with overage at API pricing.
Credits pool: unused ones sit there until you need them. Quotas do not. A daily quota means a quiet Sunday is gone rather than banked, and a heavy Monday hits the ceiling with nothing to draw on. If your work is bursty, which most shipping work is, that is a worse deal at the same nominal price.
Two people, one plan name, different prices
Existing paid subscribers were grandfathered when the model changed. So "Windsurf Pro" does not describe a single price any more, and advice from someone on an old plan may not apply to you at all.
If you are grandfathered, the practical warning is to find out what happens to that rate before you change tier, because you are unlikely to get it back.
What the split scores are telling you
G2 sits at 4.3, Trustpilot at 1.4. The G2 reviews largely predate the pricing changes and describe the editor, which is good. The Trustpilot reviews come after and describe the billing and the ownership churn. Read the dates on any review of this product before you weigh it.
The custodian problem
Windsurf has been Codeium, nearly OpenAI's, partly Google's, and is now Cognition's. The free tier got cut back along the way. None of that is the editor's fault and all of it is your risk, because the deal you sign up for has demonstrably not survived contact with a change of owner.

- •Free tier: genuinely usable, and the right way to try it.
- •Paying: Cursor is the better editor and the more stable vendor, which is a low bar it still clears.
- •Grandfathered on an old price: stay put, and do not change tier casually.
