What Claude Actually Costs in 2026
Twenty dollars, and then a wall on Thursday afternoon. How the limits really work.
What you are actually buying
A flat subscription with a rolling five-hour usage window plus a weekly cap, and extra usage sold at API rates.
Do the maths
- =Two limits apply at once: the rolling five-hour window and the weekly cap. Hitting either stops you.
- =Overage is sold at API rates, so heavy use is metered even though the plan is advertised as flat.
- =That makes the API the correct comparison for heavy users: the same work, priced the same way, without the subscription on top.

Where the bill surprises people
- !Limits are deliberately not published in units you can predict, so you cannot budget your week in advance.
- !Anthropic has tightened them repeatedly since introducing weekly caps in August 2025.
- !Anthropic has tested removing Claude Code from the entry tier, so what your plan includes is not guaranteed for the term.
- !G2 sits at 4.6 and Trustpilot at 1.5, which is the same product described by people who did and did not hit the wall.
Worth it if
You write, edit or code and the output quality is the job. It is the best of the mainstream assistants at all three.
Not worth it if
You hit the ceiling most days. At that point you are a metered customer paying a subscription for the privilege, and the API is usually cheaper.
The split scores are not a contradiction
Claude scores 4.6 on G2 and 1.5 on Trustpilot. Both are honest. The first group is describing what comes out of the model, which is the best writing and coding help available at this price. The second is describing what happens when you are mid-task at 4pm and the window closes.
Which group you land in depends entirely on your usage, and the pricing page cannot tell you which one you will be.
How the limits actually stack
There are two, and they apply simultaneously. A rolling five-hour window governs bursts. A weekly cap, added in August 2025, governs the total. Hit either and you stop. Extra usage is sold at API rates.
That last part is the important one, because it means the flat subscription is not flat at the top end. Once you are buying overage you are a metered customer who is also paying a subscription fee.
The arithmetic heavy users should do
If you hit limits most days, price your actual token usage through the API directly and compare it to your subscription plus overage. A lot of heavy users find the API is cheaper for the same work, with no ceiling to plan around. You lose the interface, which for some people is worth the money and for others is not.
What your plan includes is not fixed
Anthropic has tightened limits repeatedly and has tested pulling Claude Code from the entry tier. Nothing about that is unusual in this market, and it is the reason to pay monthly rather than annually.
What we would do
- •Writing, editing, long documents, code: pay for it, it is the best at these.
- •Hitting the wall daily: move to the API and keep the subscription only if you want the interface.
- •Considering annual: no. The terms have moved more than once.
