What Zapier AI Actually Costs in 2026
Your automations did not change. Why did the bill triple?
What you are actually buying
Tasks, with AI steps billed by model tier so one step can consume several tasks.
Do the maths
- =AI steps are multiplied by model tier: Standard counts as 1, Advanced as 3, Premium as 5.
- =Advanced is the default, so an AI step costs 3 tasks unless you changed it, not 1.
- =A Zap that runs 100 times a month with one default AI step consumes 300 tasks from that step alone.
- =Every internal step, retry and filter burns billable tasks too, so the multiplier lands on an already-inflated count.
Worked from rates the vendor publishes. We do not estimate your usage, because we cannot know it, and a made-up average is worse than no number.
Where the bill surprises people
- !The expensive tier is the default. Existing Zaps you built before the change may be running on it without you choosing it.
- !AI steps are unavailable on the free plan entirely, so testing an idea requires paying first.
- !Retries count. A flaky integration bills you for every attempt.
- !Users describe climbing from around $10 a month to several hundred without changing what they automate.
Worth it if
You are connecting systems that genuinely have no other bridge, and you audit which model tier each AI step uses.
Not worth it if
You are using AI steps for something a simple formatter or a filter could do. You are paying a 3x multiplier for a text tidy-up.
The multiplier is the whole story
Since June 2026 AI steps in Zapier are billed by model tier: Standard counts as one task, Advanced as three, Premium as five. Advanced is the default.
That means the arithmetic most people carry in their heads is wrong by a factor of three. A Zap firing 100 times a month with a single AI step is not 100 tasks from that step, it is 300. Add the filters, paths and retries around it, each of which also bills, and the gap between what you expect and what you are charged gets wide quickly.
Go and look at your existing Zaps
This is the practical action and it takes ten minutes. Open the Zaps you built before the change and check which model tier each AI step is set to. If you never chose, you are on the 3x default.
Plenty of AI steps in real automations are doing something small: tidying text, extracting a field, classifying into two buckets. Those do not need the expensive model, and moving them down is a straight two-thirds cut on that step with no change in output quality.
Why the bills climb without anyone changing anything
Zapier bills the work, not the intent. Internal steps, filters that reject a record, retries against a flaky endpoint: all billable. As your data volume grows, every one of those scales with it, which is how people describe going from around ten dollars a month to several hundred while insisting, correctly, that they did not change their automations.
What we would do
- •Audit model tiers on every existing AI step. This is the single highest-value ten minutes on this page.
- •Replace AI steps that are doing formatting with actual formatter steps.
- •Watch task consumption for a full month before committing to an annual plan, because the volume is what bills you, not the number of Zaps.

Zapier disclosed in Feb 2025 that an unauthorized user accessed internal code repositories via an employee 2FA misconfiguration, and that customer data had been inadvertently copied into those repositories.
